¿Cuántos años tienes?

In Spanish, when we want to ask someone's age,
we say ¿Cuántos años tienes?

To tell someone our age, we say "Tengo _____ años"
  • Tengo diez años'.
  • Tengo dos años.
  • Tengo nueve años.
  • Tengo once años.

The birthday song in Spanish, Feliz Cumpleaños , has the same tune as Happy Birthday.

Speedy Gonzales features in this video with the English and Spanish versions of Happy Birthday and Feliz Cumpleaños

Hola y Adiós

 Hola y Adiós
Saludos y Despedidas

In Spanish -
  • How would you greet your friends?
  • How would you greet your teacher in the morning?
  • What are tres (3) different ways you could say goodbye?

How is this different to the way you say hello and goodbye in your family?

In the cartoon below, see how to use different greetings at different times of the day.

¡Buenos días! – Good morning
¡Buenas tardes! – Good afternoon
¡Buenas noches! – Good evening/good night
¡Hola! – Hello
¡Adios! – goodbye
¡Hasta luego! – see you later
¡Hasta la vista! – see you later
¡Hasta pronto! – see you soon
¡Hasta mañana! – see you tomorrow
¡Nos vemos! - I'll be seeing you
¡Chau! - Bye
¡Qué  te vaya bien! - It's been good to see you

What do we know about the letter "h" in Spanish? Do we have silent letters in the English alphabet?

¡Buenos días!         ¡Buenas tardes!           ¡Buenas noches!

                                     ¡Adios!

Los Paises y Las Mascotas

Bienvenidos a la semana dos.

The link here takes you to a map of Latin American countries.  As you move your mouse over the map, you can 'click' on a country to hear the name of the country, see their flag and capital city.
Does everyone in Latin America speak Spanish?

In  this link we learn the countries and capital cities of South America. See if you can keep up!
Ok, now for Central America .
Now that you are an expert - this link has both South America and Central America.

Sing along with this song to practise your Spanish greetings.
Or try this rap for more saludos (greetings).

Year 8 Students:
We are learning vocabulary for animals and  mascotas (pets) .
This video clip  uses music in an interesting way.
The video here continues with more household mascotas (pets)

Here is a link to some Spanish games to help you learn and practice vocabulary for mascotas (pets). You can do the tutorial first, or if you are feeling confident, you can move straight to the games. There are several different games to choose from.

Some of you may know  this story, Oso Café Oso Café . How many different animals and colours mentioned in the story can you recognise?

El alfabeto español (Spanish alphabet) sounds a little different to the alphabet in English.
Sing along with this salsa version.
And another version here

Dime ¿Cómo es tu familia?  is a song about family, we learned last year. See how much you can remember.

And this song ¿Puedo ir al Baño? was a great hit with The Gardens students last year.

Notice the different accents for the 'c' sound in 'cerdo' and 'cinco' and the 'y' sound in 'gallo'.
Which countries do you think the two accents are from?

The next clip includes farm animals and the sounds they make in Spanish.
Are they the same as English?
Can you work out the Spanish words for 'farm' and  'uncle'? Leave me a message when you do.

The song En la Finca de Papá is sung to the tune of Old MacDonald had a Farm.
It is a great way to practise animal sounds and the verb sounds 'a e i o u' in Spanish.
